Images are important too!

Friday, November 30th, 2007

When it comes to images, it is as important when it comes to SEO. Why because Search Engines are also reading the alt tags of each images it crawls. This is good to know when it comes to properly optimizing a web page. A good web SEO person should always make sure that the web designer is always making a note of this. This good SEO practice will not only improve your web page but also help tell the individual person that can’t see the image that didn’t download for some reason.

So Much Content Needed with Low Number of Keywords

Friday, November 30th, 2007

Recently we got mandated to write atleast four to six paragraphs on content on home pages for our seo timberlakes…My quandary is that if you have only 10-15 keywords for the client…how do you write those total of paragraphs with such little keywords, another negative is that most keywords repeat when there are so few…any suggestions, I am really asking this question

I understand the value of being repetative with your keyword penetration but sometimes it gets a little too ridiculous

Pay per click Advertising

Pay per click Advertising

an advertising model used on search engines, advertising networks, and content websites/blogs, where advertisers only pay when a user actually clicks on an ad to visit the advertiser’s website. Advertisers bid on keywords they believe their target market would type in the search bar when they are looking for a product or service. When a user types a keyword query matching the advertiser’s keyword list, or views a page with relevant content, the advertiser’s ad may be shown. These ads are called a “Sponsored link” or “sponsored ads” and appear next to, and sometimes, above the natural or organic results on search engine results pages, or anywhere a webmaster/blogger chooses on a content page.

Pay per click ads may also appear on content network websites. In this case, ad networks such as Google AdSense and Yahoo! Publisher Network attempt to provide ads that are relevant to the content of the page where they appear, and no search function is involved..

While many companies exist in this space, Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Marketing, and Microsoft adCenter are the largest network operators as of 2007. Depending on the search engine, minimum prices per click start at US$0.01 (up to US$0.50), these prices are often referred to as Costs Per Click (CPC). Very popular search terms can cost much more on popular engines. Arguably this advertising model may be open to abuse through click fraud, although Google and other search engines have implemented automated systems to guard against this.

Always Something

Well, if you ever have to personally deal with a server, there are going to be times when the connection to that server is going to be slow as heck. Unless fixing that is your job, you can’t particularly do much about that fact. That doesn’t mean however that you can just sit around. ‘Cause well, there’s always something to do. Some may seem obvious and some might not.

Have you written the content for that site? Designed the header? Set up the analytics to the site? As I write this, this is something to do. Because yes, I’m having those problems right now as well and all the other components to the sites I’m working on are done as of now.

One or Two R’s?

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

Yes, I’m sure this is a very moot issue for the lot of you now since we know from elementary that yes, spelling counts. Recently while working on a Cruise to Cash site dealing with discounted vacations and the like, one of the keywords seemed to have two different spellings. Put them both into Google and you’ll quickly find out which one is an error. Surprisingly enough, they both pull in results, but it just looks horribly unprofessional to plaster a misspelled word across your site, right?

In this instance, this word was “Caribbean”. Where as you can tell, the word had two instances: one with one “r” and one with two. Now it’s only human to misspell a word every now and then, but with programs like Microsoft Office and the like readily available (some being open source) you should be able to avoid the little misspellings. Grammar however, you’ll need a little bit more since the vague “consider revision” message you’re bound to see can get incredibly annoying. Back to the point, double check your work. It’ll be the difference between an angry client and a happy one.

Folder Organization

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

In SEO it is important to keep all of your work, and other related files nice and organized. For instance, create a folder with your name on it on your desktop, and for each week, inside of this folder, you make another folder for each client that comes to you. Inside of that folder you can create a text document for your sites content and CSS. Images that you might want to use for the site can also be placed here at this time as well. Then if you ever have to go back to find a client, they are all labeled by client ID. to search for a client say, 333, all you would have to do is right click the folder with YOUR name on it located on your desktop, and click on search. Enter the client ID in the search bar and there you have it. you will know if you have ever worked on the client or not. hope this helps at all with anything. oh…also copy YOUR folder to the server!

META Discription Tag

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

While many feel that metadata (META Tags) are of little relevance in today’s SEM environment, I like to think otherwise.

The META Description Tag was designed to be an integral part of page development and document identification.

When dealing with the <head></head> section of your document, there are three pieces of metadata that I make mandatory on most pages that I develop; charset, description and keywords. I’ll talk about the META Keywords Tag in another topic (don’t obsess over this one, but don’t ignore it either).

The META Description Tag is still an important factor in the overall equation of page development. Everything you do to that page will have an influence on something. You know, that “for every action there is a reaction” type thing.

RSS Feeds

Friday, November 16th, 2007

RSS feeds are great for E-commerce sites. Why, Because this helps drive traffic to sites. The more you get other sites to link to your website and subscribe to your feeds, the more customer you’ll eventually get. The website then becomes an SEO friendly site. Reason for this, is search engines see the links to your site and then improves your ranking.

Keep Occupied!

Keep Occupied!

When at the workplace, the best thing to do for yourself is to keep occupied, no matter how mindless, boring, or frustrating the job is. It is the simplest and easiest way make a workday go by faster, keep your mind busy, and keep your hands moving. One of my personal favorite things to do at work is probably the easiest thing to enjoy at work. Music! If applicable at YOUR workplace, I recommend it. I know that when I am just sitting at my desk, and working on a website, or researching for content, it can get kind of mindless not to mention, listening to all of the surrounding noise including physical and semantical. It can also be very distracting if you are friends with the people you work with. Also Keep in mind that when you are able to focus to listening to your favorite tunes, you could just go and go while working. Trust me I know the feeling.
