Write unique content

Unique content is important too. You need to provide content that has different information than what is on other sites and other Web pages.

Add new content all the time

Sites that have new content added on a regular basis are seen as more reliable than sites that rarely do. This also helps you to increase the amount of relevant content on your site, which also improves your rankings.

Create a great keyword phrase

The first thing you should do when working on search engine optimization is find a great keyword phrase for that page. You shouldn’t try to optimize your entire site to one keyword phrase - instead focus on writing pages for specific keywords and phrases.

Choose a phrase that is popular, but not too popular

When trying to decide on a keyword phrase, you want to find one that is popular but not extremely popular. This may seem counter-intuitive, but the reality is that extremely popular keywords are very desirable and so very competitive. It’s better to try to optimize for keywords that you can rank higher. You’ll get more pageviews from a less popular keyword when you’re on the first or second page of the search engines, than from a super popular keyword that you only make it to page 50 of search engines.

Jumping Back in with a Splash

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

Reworking splash sites that got lost in the transfer of IP addresses…..haven’t worked on one in a while but it is good to start to familiarize myself with the whole process again, although I know they are simple I feel like every time I do a new splash I want to add something new to each one to learn more techniques and also to not make everyone look exactly the same cuz that is boring and looks redundant….

Should be up tomorrow, check it out let me know what you think

Today’s

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

Everyday I get more and more comfortable with Photoshop cs3, making headers and other images for sites. Today I implemented a couple of techniques that I recently figured out, the Bevel and Emboss - with a little Contour dashed in there too.  Until today I had yet to use these because, well, I’ve only been on photoshop for about a month now and still quite the abecedarian.  I’m not even for sure how to explain what they do…well, that may be a bit of a fib. To be totally honest with you I just don’t have time to explain it, and you are more than capable of opening up photoshop and figuring them out yourself. Not to mention, you are probably already better with cs3, or any version of photshop for that matter, than I am and are probably laughing at me anyways. I can show you though.  I used Bevel and Emboss with a drop shadow for the header on this site.

Jooooyyy!

Keywords are what make SEO possible. When someone want to look for the best insurance agency around town, their search would most likely consist of keywords that include a localized term followed by the key term insurance. Keywords are stored in a search index. Common words like articles a, an, the, and conjunctions and, or, but are not treated as keywords because it is inefficient to do so. Almost every English-language site on the Internet has the article “the“, and so it makes no sense to search for it. The most popular search engine, Google removed this stop such as “the” and “a” from its indexes for several years, but then re-introduced them, making certain types of precise search possible again.

You can see key terms at work on this site right here http://workathomevalricofl.com/ on this site.

Mix Style

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

If you are having trouble with site formatting because IE and Firefox can’t seem to play nice? Me too! Only I totally found a way to make it all work out nicely and your site look purdy on both browsers.  Yeah, integrating style sheets for IE and Firefox is way easier if you just make 2 style sheets (one for IE and one for Firefox) then use this nifty little code to make them harmonize like a strong Perfect 4th.

Just slap this in your page and both your styles sheets will play nicely together. yay for this, this for yay!

Site Relocation

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

Moving a large amount of sites can be incredibly troublesome when there are issues in the middle of moving them from one hosting to another. While looking at the sites that had been moved over, a site for bathroom remodeling Minneapolis MN had been missing its CSS and images but this was easily fixed thanks to the backups still left. Once more, backups save the day.

Five More Search Tips

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

1. How To Search A Specific Domain
If you’d like to limit your searches to a specific domain, such as .edu, .org, .gov, and more, you can use the site: command to accomplish this.

2. Add Search Engines to Your Firefox Toolbar
I have about 12 search engines and search services on my Firefox toolbar right now; it saves me a lot of time because I can just type in my search query and instantly pick which search engine I’d like to search with.

3. 100 Search Engines
I love using new search engines and so in 2005, I decided to put together a list of 100 different search engines and search services. Don’t be afraid to try something new - branch out a bit and you might be surprised at what comes back in your search results. I use different search engines throughout the day depending on the nature of my search.

4. How To Use del.icio.us
How did I ever get along without del.icio.us? This social bookmarking site is one of my top destinations throughout the day; I search through other people’s bookmarks and add my own. An invaluable resource to see what a snapshot of the Web community is searching for, I also love just seeing what other people find interesting.

5. Search the Web with Toolbars
Many people save a lot of time in their Web searches by using a toolbar, which is basically a software application which gives searches the ability to perform searches and other functions quickly. For example, I have the Google Firefox toolbar on my browser right now.

Meta Tags

Monday, February 18th, 2008

Meta tags are an important part in SEO techniques. Search Engines use Meta description tags in their search engine result page (SERP) and often users refer to your Meta tags before clicking on the links to your site in the SERP. Therefore, you should optimize your Meta description properly, meaning your targeted keywords should be in the description and clearly specify what your site is about.

Meta keywords may not have as much value as before but there are some Search engines that still refer to your Meta keywords tag. So, don’t think they have no value. Although not as much as before, they are still valuable.

Minimizing Downtime

Monday, February 18th, 2008

To get really good search engine placements, you need to be consistent with what it is you are showing, yet dynamic with the fine details. An example of this is an online store. Everytime the spider comes back, they see a store selling a particular type of goods, but each time they come back, the goods are changed. New specials, new products, altered prices and altered content keep things fresh, while the similar feel keeps things stable.

So what happens when a spider comes to a site and sees an under construction page or a PHP error message? You can imagine that it’s not pretty. Try to keep your sites up as much as possible to keep the search engine spiders aware of what’s going on. Even 5 seconds of downtime can be bad if those 5 seconds are the window that the spider arrives in.

Of Course I Don’t Look Busy, I Did It Right The First Time

Monday, February 18th, 2008

Today I am going to talk about quality of work. Have you ever had one of those days at the office, where you walk in and nothing is really getting done? I don’t mean nothing as is laziness or apathy, but in fact you just cant seem to finish a project. Either it keeps being returned to you for small or inane issues that you could have avoided had you kept an eye on the thoroughness and quality of your work. It can be depressing and frustrating not to mention irritating that you can seem to complete the work for good. Well what about when you get someone else’s poor work returned to you? You realize that if they had done it right the first time, you wouldn’t have to redo the work they should have completed correctly the first time. Not only is it slowing you down, but also slowing down the output and productivity of department, not to mention the company. So to avoid issues with anger and unnecessary over work, do it right the first time. Take the extra time and effort to double check your work.
