Focus.

Friday, May 30th, 2008

What might help you to write better content is to try to focus on one particular keyword or keyterm per paragraph.  This helps you to get your keyword density without worrying about what you have and haven’t used.

A suggestion would be to write the keyword at least once per every 90 words or so.  This would keep your keyword density at the necessary 1-3% that it needs to be.  So, if you can keep to this formula, your content should come out pretty strong, as well as being completely organized.

The longblob Issue

Friday, May 30th, 2008

I was working on a recent project and noticed that the content was cut short, and the bottom weblink was not appearing. After awhile of adding new content, I noticed that this content was not updating entirely. I was dumbfounded. After messing around with the database for awhile; I noticed that the type for the field “content” in “content pages” was marked as text. Only allowing a certain number of characters for each entry. I switched the field type to longblob; and, like a wizard waving his wand, everything was fixed.

My only thought is that this database setting may have changed when I updated to t3.  I will make certain to edit this database entry each time I update a site, considering most of the content entries are far greater than 65535 characters.

First week

Friday, May 30th, 2008

This was my first week and I learned alot about SEO practices and how we do things as a company. Finished a new account, some reworks, and worked on a flash picture tour for one of our designers. Starting to close the learning curve a little and definitely stayed busy. See everyone on Monday

Feed Your Brain!

Word to the wise.

Keep snacks handy.

This is important.  And I don’t mean gobs of chocolate or handfuls of candy.  I’m talking about trail mix, nuts…that sort of thing.

See, while writing content, you want to keep your mind fresh and alert.  Good snacks can fuel creativity.  Bad ones…well…you’ll crash.  Which isn’t very good for your content writing.

And this really applies to anything creative that you’re working on.  A well-fed mind gives well-crafted content (or art, or whatever).  So keep that bag of cashews handy, dear writer!

Another Confusing Ranking Issue

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Looking over the ranks for two sites dealing with keyword search engine placement, I’ve found it very confusing as to how one site can pull 70+ first page rankings in one report and another one directly related to it with very similar content concerning how to advertise on top of search engines just doesn’t have as many placements. Google and search engine spiders…how I wish I knew someone that knew exactly how they worked (like a developer). Then I’d get all the answers and never worry about it again.

Flogging the Blog.

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

Wow…that sounds dirty.

The reason for the title is because I think I’ve beaten this topic to death on this blog:

Useful content.

When you write your content, make sure that what you’re writing has at least some semblance of relevance to what your client’s business is or does.  Makes no sense if you’re ranting and raving about the different sizes of canine breeds if your client sells hot dogs.  Or talking about the history of the dollar bill when you’re writing content about an MLM.  It just doesn’t work, and really drags down the quality of your content.  Doesn’t matter how many keywords you’re able to fit in.  It looks plain bad.

Right…so you can put away the minicam now.  Nothing to see here…

Link In’s

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

With key terms like keyword search engine placement, you will find it incredibly difficult to rank due to its high competition. One more thing aside from content that you can try to do to get a better ranking is to handle a link building campaign. Links from high ranking sites that lead to your site are actually a plus. The downside is, ones from bad areas may actually hurt you. Keep good sources in mind for your link in’s.

Pagination

Monday, May 19th, 2008

While pagination is rather easy to add to a site there is still an abundant of folks just not getting it right, or even doing it at all. Since I am not the pagination expert I won’t be going in depth about the how-to’s but instead I’ll point you in th right direction. Faruk Ates has written a great article on Pagination where he defines 7 very important do’s and dont’s.

Cheat Sheets

Friday, May 16th, 2008

Sometimes a helping hand is all you need to finish up that damn project, or just get through those horrendous tasks that keep kicking you down like a Krispy Kreme truck driver making a late delivery to the 7-11 next to Jenny Craig’s. Because information is key, and sometimes you lose your keys, the great folks over at smashingmagazine.com compiled a list of said helping hands; cheat sheets for quick referencing. Everything from PHP to CSS2 can be quickly printed out and posted next to your desk.

User’s Goals

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Keep your goals (the goals of the site and the users’ goals) fresh in your mind by writing them down and repeating them at the beginning of each design session. If you get tired or feel like you’ve lost touch with the message you wish to project - STOP! Take a break, then come back refreshed and look at your goals again.
